I took this week off, and I wanted to share a few things I enjoyed during my break.
The title for this newsletter comes from Marilyn Nelson, a storytelling poet profiled in this podcast episode of On Being, “Communal Pondering in a Noisy World”.
I also enjoyed this podcast episode from The Art of Manliness, an interview with writer Nicholas Carr, “How the Internet Makes Our Minds Shallow”.
During my break I finished part of a fence project. I’ve been measuring time in experiences; one fence panel = listening to both sides of Wilco, “Being There”.
Books I’m reading: If It Bleeds by Stephen King (short stories collection, typical King) and Joy at Work by Marie Kondo and Scott Sonenshein (point of clarification: they do not suggest a specific limit for number of books you own; just keep the ones that bring you joy).
I appreciated this quote from a Choice Literacy article by Bitsy Parks: “Beauty invites kids to slow down and show care, and it gives the teacher time to listen and observe.”
Are your instructional plans feeling cluttered? Subscribe to the newsletter to receive four professional learning sessions on how to create your ideal curriculum, beginning later this month. I’ll demonstrate how to critically examine your curriculum resources, align unit goals with the larger purpose of education, develop authentic assessments, and create the conditions for optimal student learning.
