Gen, I absolutely love the idea of starting the year right out with finding out who our students are and helping them to explore who they are. This would be the ultimate curriculum, truly responsive to our students. What a great to show students that we care about them, they are important, their thoughts and dreams are important, they have control over their futures.

Genevieve, Thank you for this wonderful post. I find it most encouraging when reading the posts of others, the spaces where they recognize through reflection where things in education need to be shifted. It really is so much, Maya Angelou's quote, "Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better. Do better." Your idea for starting the year with identity and having the end of the year be a reflection and celebration of how much students have learned and grown in their own identities is one way to do better. I love it! What an incredibly powerful message that would send to students.
