Screeners. Interventions. Supervision and evaluation. None of these parts of our educational system have gone away, yet to ask our teachers to engage in these initiatives right now is difficult with all the challenges. Share how you are handling this and what you might need to be successful.
One teacher leader (literacy specialist) asked me how we handle stressed-out staff when we need to screen students and they are resistant due to lack of time. My response:
"It might help to frame the situation for the teachers:
1. Here is what we have to do and why.
2. Here are the obstacles.
3. Here is why we have tried so far.
Maybe then ask for teachers’ feedback. What ideas do they have? You can put it on paper or in an email, so they can see it clearly and direct their frustrations toward the situation instead of any person. Having them co-own the issue may build empathy."
We also discussed reaching out to their supervisor for advice and support.
