Being at the HS level I can appreciate your comment about how fiction can help us "manage our own feelings". There are times when students don't find the relevance in reading fiction and I usually go with it teaches us empathy... so I am excited to add this to my "list" of reasons to read fiction.
Thank you Shannon for this secondary/student perspective. What are the immediate benefits to the reader? And one of the reasons for reading fiction might be - there is no reason! (other than for leisure and to enjoy a good story)
Agreed! Sometimes we forget that. The joy of reading should not be overlooked. I worry about those HS students who haven't found that yet and are in the mindset that they are non-readers or even reading haters.😒

And thanks for sharing all your great thinking!
