Can you prove that RR is more effective than other interventions? The linked study provides no evidence of that.

Henry, I am not a researcher so I don't think I can effectively respond to your question.

What other interventions are you considering?

Thank you for affirming the work of Reading Recovery with students and teachers. My district discontinued Reading Recovery this past year. In my view, this was a great loss for literacy instruction for the benefits that you listed in your blog. The two building administrators that I spoke to about Reading Recovery said that they wanted more flexibility with intervention staff to serve more students in small groups versus 1:1 instruction. If we got to the point of so many students needing reading intervention shouldn't we be looking at our classroom instruction and how we can strengthen learning with the core curriculum? What insights do you have? Thank you.

I am sorry to hear that Cynthia. Your district was a destination when it came to this work.

I understand the need to have more flexibility for serving more students with reading needs. But you make a good point: has core instruction first been evaluated for effectiveness? Sounds like they are trying to address symptoms vs. understanding the root cause of their challenges on how to respond school- and district-wide.

Insight: Start with beliefs!
