Honestly, it made me exhilarated to read the transcript and recall what used to be the heart of Reading Workshop in Northern Virginia- independent reading with conferring as the critical piece. Everything discussed and shared was “spot on” in my opinion and I related strongly to administrators sitting alongside teachers throughout the ELA block, not just the mini-lesson!! I would say the same for anytime one is observing any lesson!
My Student Teachers learn that “conferring” occurs or should occur whenever learners are working independently!

My final thought is that, in Northern VA where the Governor passed the Virginia Literacy Act, an act which takes professionalism and autonomy away from all educators, I hope and pray that we read articles/interviews like this and consider what we can still do based around our beliefs and knowledge of what is truly important for our students.
