When I was a 5th and 6th teacher, I would provide two-three chapter books for kids to vote on. I cannot recall all the specific titles; My Daniel by Pam Conrad and The Ghost of Fossil Glen by Cynthia Defelice were two options. Both books are very plot-driven, hard to put down, which was a great way to associate reading with engagement. By providing choice, I believe students felt ownership in classroom decision-making from Day 1.

I like All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold. I want to let my first grade students know from day one that each one of them belongs in our class and we welcome each other to our classroom every day. I also use School's First Day of School by Adam Rex. This book has a different twist to let children know it is okay to be nervous about the first day of school.

Thank you Judy for sharing these titles. Thoughtful, considerate choices for your new students.
